Learning Lab Graduates for 2017!

RMYC operates the Learning Lab Program as an integral part of juvenile justice and mental health services in Taos County. In partnership with Taos Municipal Schools, we provide temporary educational alternatives for youth who have been referred to the juvenile justice probation office or who are at high risk of such a referral due to fighting, truancy, substance abuse or other disruptive behaviors. The Learning Lab serves 8 to 16 youth (per year), ages 12-16 years old, providing an alternative educational placement and asset-based positive youth development. We are incredible proud of our accomplishments this year. Here are just a few:

• 18, 412 words written through daily journal time (a Learning Lab record!)
• All students completed the young adult novel, “The Secret Story of Sonia Rodriguez”, which explores themes related to immigration and identity, traditional vs. contemporary family traditions, and navigating the pressures of teenage-hood.
• Over 1400 minutes of independent reading of books which each student has chosen.
  Trained 8 adorable puppies. These puppies will eventually be placed with people with disabilities, in hospitals and courthouses around the country, with veterans, or even with the FBI.
• Each student met with Ms. D, a licensed social worker, for 1.5 hours per week of individual counseling and participated in 1.5 hours per week of group work.

The Learning Lab embodies exactly what it means to Make a Difference at RMYC!
